Kelly-Moore's 'Green' Initiatives: Fact Sheet

Kelly-Moore Paint Company is committed to meeting the top environmental concerns of California’s stringent regulations. This commitment to the environment begins with its recycled and ‘green’ paint lines and extends to its paint manufacturing facility which has received five of the most widely recognized green business awards from the State of California and San Mateo County. The company has been recognized for its outstanding efforts to reduce pollution and solid waste, and conserve water, energy and other natural resources.

California is well known for having the toughest environmental regulations and inspection processes in the country. To meet these regulations and to positively contribute to the environment, Kelly-Moore has introduced the following initiatives:
The First Company to Offer Recycled Paint

  • At Kelly-Moore, environmental impact has always been a high priority. In 1995, the company developed a safer, more environmentally responsible technique to dispose of leftover paint. It also became the first paint company in the industry to collect and re-manufacture a quality recycled paint – eCoat. Since then, Kelly-Moore continues to invest in recycling technology.

New Zero-VOC Paints

  • In 2009, Kelly-Moore further ‘greened’ its paint. The company introduced two new zero-VOC, low-odor product lines, the premium Enviro Coat and the professional Green Coat, to improve overall air quality.

An Energy Efficient and Carbon Neutral Plant

  • Since becoming certified as a green business in January 2009 by the California Assembly, Kelly-Moore continues to green its manufacturing facility by:
  • Enrolling in a PG&E program to buy carbon offsets making Kelly-Moore’s plant carbon neutral.
  • Replacing old HVAC units with energy-efficient ones, which have reduced electricity consumption by 40 percent.
  • Installing a new dust collector that reduces plant noise levels and energy consumption by approximately 50 percent.
  • Capturing waste heat generated from the plant’s large compressor to heat an adjacent building.
  • Installing energy-efficient lights called SmartPODs in one of the facility’s warehouses, which has saved $15,000 per year in electricity costs, an 83.5 percent reduction.

Waste Reduction Recycling Programs

  • In its San Carlos manufacturing facility, Kelly-Moore diverted more than 85 percent of its waste by initiating a series of recycling programs for solid waste and wash water:

Solid Waste Management

  • Previously, when half-used paint cans were returned, the paint and cans were considered un-recyclable waste. To combat the problem, Kelly-Moore introduced a system that removes the labels and residue from the cans making them recyclable. The returned paint is extensively sorted by color and type and re-manufactured into eCoat.
  • The company also started a program to recycle Super Sack storage bags, cut up plastic totes and other previously un-recyclable containers, resulting in additional reductions in landfill waste.

Wastewater and Natural Resource Management

  • Kelly-Moore’s main source of waste comes from paint grinders, mixers, dispersers and filling equipment. The company developed a system that 100% recycles equipment wash water and returns it back into production batches.
  • Kelly-Moore developed a collection system for rainwater to offset water usage and built a berm around the manufacturing plant to prevent any possible paint spillage from getting into the local creek.
  • The company reduced the amount of waste discharged from its sanitary sewer and has a comprehensive storm water pollution prevention plan to prevent discharge of contaminants.
  • Kelly-Moore documents all wastewater operations; flow charts detail the waste throughout.

Operation and Maintenance Practices

  • Raw materials and finished products are protected in a warehouse with seismically engineered storage racks to prevent spills. Additionally, there are drain plugs and level sensors by all drains in tanks that are monitored to alert an alarm if capacity reaches its peak.
  • Secondary containment is used in all tank farms; wood and steel bumpers are placed and process piping is elevated to avoid collisions and leaks.
  • The facility separates incompatible materials within at least thirty feet of each other and uses material inventory management to prevent any incompatible mixing.

Preventative Maintenance Procedures

  • The plant manager inspects storage and process vessels, containment, pumps, fitting valves, piping, foundations, supports, guards, level control devices and overflow alarms on a weekly basis.
  • Kelly-Moore uses drum handling attachments for forklifts.
  • The facility executes secure procedures for the acceptance of bulk materials.
  • Kelly-Moore possesses procedures to eliminate cross-connection, which includes securing all direct drains to the sewer.
  • This system is operated under professional facility personnel and the direct supervision of the maintenance or plant manager.
